Visual Communications

Visual communications is a heady mixture of traditional media (television, radio, film), which incorporates newer technologies such as digital design and editing. Visual communications covers a wide variety of different media held together by this common thread. Most schools are well aware of the breadth of different types of media that visual communications touch and will allow you to try different aspects. Most often you will be allowed to follow your own desires, interests, and strengths within a particular field. Similar to a traditional art school foundation course, you should get grounding in all aspects in order to make a well-informed decision concerning your chosen academic direction. Courses may include: graphic design, illustration, photography, animation, web pages, and digital design. Remember that all of these can be used across a wide variety of industries from gaming to newspaper media, and television to video games.

You may help your application to your chosen school by showing you have experience in art, design, or photography. Many editing suites use a variety of image manipulating software, so you would probably find it advantageous to be familiar with at least one package. The beauty of visual communications is that it is interdisciplinary. This diversified skill set and flexibility means that even if you start off in say video production; you should be able to move into gaming or animation sectors. If you are not 100% sure which career direction to go in, and you enjoy subjects such as design and art at school, then visual communications could be just the program to highlight your strengths.
