Stop Motion Animation

With CGI animation popular among audiences and producers alike, even the construction paper cut-out characters from South Park had migrated from stop motion animation to computer rendering. Fortunately, a new wave of television shows featuring stop-motion animation has cast this classic technique as a way to create edgy, even subversive material on a low budget.

Over the past fifteen years, few companies have kept the torch burning for stop motion animation like British studio Aardman Animation. After creating breakout commercials on both shores of the Atlantic, director Nick Park unleashed the hit series of Wallace and Gromit short films.

Exposure on public broadcasting stations in America helped Park create the full-length stop motion animation feature Chicken Run with Mel Gibson, followed by a theatrical release for Wallace and Gromit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit. With Aardman's only CGI film considered a box office flop, the studio returns to its roots with a new Wallace and Gromit short for the BBC in 2008.

American Directors Use Stop Motion Animation for Shock Value
American filmmakers have pushed boundaries with stop motion animation to stand out from their competition. Robot Chicken animates – and often dismembers – classic childhood action figures to comic effect. The television show's production studio now boasts over eighty stop motion animation projects, ranging from music videos to television commercials.

Another television series, Moral Orel, parodies classic stop motion animation shows like Gumby and Davey and Goliath. Meanwhile, the new Logo network recently launched its own controversial stop motion animation series, Rick and Steve. While both series take more time to film than CGI shows, the projects' low budgets allow them to thrive while building audiences.
