Illustration Schools

You may think that hand drawn illustration is a dying art, but it is alive and kicking in various formats that computer programs just cannot replicate. Having said that, some illustrators use certain applications which digitize freehand drawings. Illustration schools can teach you a range of skills that could help you embark on a career in places that maybe had never occurred to you. Scientific illustration is a huge business. You may be involved in medical anatomical drawings, or you might be more interested in producing botanical drawings for magazines and guidebooks. These drawing need to be very clear and accurate to allow users to identify species or parts. Just think of the myriad books and magazines published on birds, flowers, fungi, anatomy, fish, and animals. All of the illustrations have been painstakingly drawn using photographs and specimens in order to show the most representative features that a student, professional, or enthusiast might need for identification. Not all illustration is for academic purposes, police artists producing likenesses from an eyewitness' description is just another use. Fashion illustrators may take a slightly different academic route via fashion school. These professionals are responsible for sketching the latest fashions as they hit the catwalk in order to be published in daily newspapers or fashion magazines.

Illustration schools in general may teach you a variety of skills. You may concentrate on figure drawing, anatomy, hands and feet, posture, animals, or botanical drawings. You may use a variety of media from traditional pen and ink or charcoal. Some illustration schools may also teach you how to use illustration software.
