Film and Video Editors
Film and video editors play a vital role in producing the final polished product that we see on television and at the movies. They ensure that the best footage is used and spliced together in order to achieve the highest quality. Film and video editors are there to ensure that the required running time is achieved, the story runs in a logical sequence, and that there is continuity flowing easily through the film. Editors may be responsible for making changes or even retakes if something is not of suitable quality. There are many different techniques, and shot angles to take into account. Just the placement of characters in a particular shot can alter the composition, and meaning within a frame. A character can be conferred with more power if placed in a particular segment and viewed from a particular height. It is this fine-tuning that can help an average film become a blockbuster in the right hands.
Competition for entry into the film and video editing industry can be cutthroat. You would need to be extremely talented and exceptionally lucky to make it without relevant training. Budding film and video editors can enhance their chances of success by undergoing a program of film and video editing. Students may learn about such things as cross cutting, cut away, master shots, lighting, 180 degree rule, talking heads, wipe, and digital manipulation to name just a few. Successful film and video editors may get their first job with a company producing training videos, or maybe on cable television. As experience and expertise grow, so responsibility and earning power will increase.
